The NBA Draft is a pivotal moment for the Milwaukee Bucks, and the conventional wisdom suggests they should draft a guard. However, I argue that this approach is misguided, and the Bucks should instead focus on drafting forwards. While guards are essential for ball handling and shot creation, they are often overvalued in the draft, leading to positional dilution. The Bucks should prioritize size and defense, as forwards typically have a more significant two-way impact. This strategy is supported by historical data, as only 10 of the 57 Finals MVPs have been guards, and most of them were shorter than 6'4" and played on elite defensive teams. Moreover, versatile forwards offer more lineup flexibility and defensive optionality, which is crucial in the modern NBA. The Bucks' roster construction points to a need for size, defense, and versatility around their superstar, Giannis Antetokounmpo. Whether the team is attempting to contend or rebuild, drafting forwards is the best path forward.
